A 17-year-old student who delivered a baby during her Class 10 board examination in Pithampur is stable, and her newborn is under specialised medical care at the District Hospital in Dhar. The incident occurred at St. John School on Tuesday while the student was appearing for her Mathematics paper. According to officials, she was seated in the examination hall and writing her exam when she sought permission to use the washroom. After she did not return for nearly 15 minutes, a female staff member was sent to check on her. Examination centre in-charge Narendra Kumar Pothe said the washroom door was locked from inside, and the sound of a baby crying was heard. The staff asked the student to open the door and immediately informed the police and called the 108 ambulance service. Referred for advanced neonatal care The girl and her newborn were first taken to the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Pithampur. Dr. Ajay Girwal, paediatric specialist at the centre, said the incident took place in the afternoon and confirmed that the baby was born prematurely. Due to the premature birth and the need for specialised neonatal care, both mother and child were referred on Wednesday to the District Hospital in Dhar through the 108 ambulance service. At the district hospital, the newborn has been admitted to the Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) for intensive monitoring and care. Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO) Dhar, Dr. Anita Singare, said, “The baby has been admitted to the SNCU and is under observation.” Doctors stated that premature infants require close monitoring of breathing, temperature regulation and feeding patterns. The baby is being observed by a team of specialists to prevent any complications. Hospital authorities confirmed that both mother and child are currently stable. Mother recovering under observation Medical officials said the mother is also stable and recovering under supervision. She is being monitored for any post-delivery complications and is receiving necessary medication and nutritional support. Doctors indicated that the next 48 to 72 hours are crucial for the newborn, although there is no immediate danger at present. Police register case Meanwhile, police have registered a case in connection with the incident. Sector-1 police station sub-inspector Chandni Singar said the minor stated in her initial statement that she had been in a relationship with a youth named Kanha Barman for nearly two years and had physical relations with him for the past year, following which she became pregnant. Her family members were reportedly unaware of the pregnancy. A case has been registered based on her statement, and efforts are underway to trace the accused.
