The superintendent of a government hostel in Datia had a love marriage 9 years ago with a man 6 years younger than her. Now, she murdered him with the help of her lover. The woman strangled her husband while sitting in the car, and her lover slit his throat with a cutting machine. After committing the murder, both stopped at a dhaba on the highway. They ate food. This very 45-minute period landed them behind bars. Dainik Bhaskar tried to find out why the superintendent ultimately murdered her own husband. How did the police catch the accused? Body found by the roadside, throat slit On February 19, morning in Phulra village, Chirula police station area of Datia, started like any other day. Villagers had set out for work in the fields and to deliver milk. During this time, some people saw the body of a man, approximately 40 years old, by the roadside leading from the Gwalior-Jhansi Highway towards the village. The body was lying face down. The deceased was wearing a green jacket. Upon receiving information, the police reached the spot. Efforts to identify were initiated, but the person could not be identified. In such a situation, the body was sent to the hospital for post-mortem. The deceased’s throat was badly cut. This made it clear that his throat had been attacked with a sharp weapon. However, there was also a suspicion of strangulation. The photo of the body was posted on social media for identification. By evening, the deceased was identified as 39-year-old Kalyan Rana, a resident of Gwalior. The post-mortem report confirmed his murder. Wife seen in dhaba’s CCTV camera Police investigated CCTV cameras installed in nearby dhabas and on the highway. CCTV footage from Shriji Dhaba on the highway showed that Kalyan Raja’s wife Hemlata (46) was present there around the time of the incident mentioned in the post-mortem report. She was accompanied by a person named Amit Suri. The needle of suspicion pointed towards Hemlata. She was taken into custody. When the police showed strictness, she broke down. Hemlata confessed to the crime, stating that she had murdered Kalyan with her lover Amit. Shortly after the incident, she went to the dhaba with Amit and had food there. During this, both stayed at the dhaba for about 45 minutes. Married Kalyan after her first husband During police interrogation, Hemlata revealed that Kalyan was her second husband. Her first husband had died in 2011. She has two daughters from her first marriage. Her husband was a teacher, and after his demise, she received a compassionate appointment. Currently, she is a superintendent at a government hostel. She met Kalyan while living in Gwalior. As their closeness grew, she and Kalyan had a love marriage in 2015. Kalyan was 6 years younger than her. Kalyan was addicted to alcohol, used to assault her Hemlata said, “Thinking that my daughters would get a father’s love and I would get support, I married Kalyan, but nothing of the sort happened. Kalyan was addicted to alcohol. After marriage, he started drinking even more. He would come home drunk, argue, and beat me. He would forcibly take my salary and spend it on alcohol.” “I was troubled by Kalyan’s actions. I lived on rent in the Murar area. Travels agent Amit Suri also lived in the same house. Amit’s behavior was good. I used to share my joys and sorrows with him. I don’t know when we became good friends and then lovers.” Lured him out of the house on the pretext of listening to a story Hemlata said that on the night of February 18, Kalyan asked for money for alcohol. When she refused, he assaulted her. I was very upset. I went to Amit and borrowed 1000 rupees, which I gave to Kalyan. Kalyan went to drink alcohol, and at that very moment, Amit and I hatched a plan to get rid of him. The plan was made to take him out in Amit’s car on the pretext of listening to a story being told in Dabra. When Kalyan returned after drinking, he was somehow convinced to go. Amit also kept a cutter machine in the car. Amit sat in the driver’s seat, Kalyan next to him, and Hemlata and her friend sat in the back. Dropped the friend on the way. As the car moved forward, Hemlata instigated Kalyan as part of a conspiracy. He started arguing. Hemlata strangled him in the moving car, threw the body by the roadside As the argument inside the car escalated, an enraged Hemlata grabbed Kalyan’s throat from behind. She started pressing it hard. Drunk Kalyan became lifeless. When they suspected that he was still alive, Amit turned the car towards Datia. Then stopped it on the deserted Phulra Road. Here, Amit took out a cutter machine and slit Kalyan’s throat. Everything was over in a few minutes. They threw the body by the roadside and both left from there. Body was to be dumped in Jhansi, but due to a misunderstanding from hoardings, it was dumped in Datia Kalyan Rana’s body was originally planned to be dumped in Uttar Pradesh. However, due to hoardings on the highway, Hemlata and Amit got confused. Actually, SP supremo and former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Akhilesh Yadav, had travelled from Datia to Jhansi. Hoardings and banners were put up all along the highway to welcome him. Seeing these very hoardings and banners, Hemlata and Amit thought they had reached the border of Uttar Pradesh. They saw a deserted area here. They took the body out, dumped it, and moved on. Neck slit due to doubt whether he was dead or not Police said – the investigation revealed that everyone left Gwalior by car at 6:30 PM. At 9:30 PM, Hemlata dropped her friend at a dhaba on the highway under Goraghat police station in Datia. From there, the car moved forward. Kalyan was strangled to death on the way. Due to doubt whether he was dead or not, his throat was slit with a cutter machine. After that, Hemlata and Kalyan threw the body on Fulra Road and reached Shriji Dhaba on the highway at around 10:20 PM. They ate dinner there and returned home. According to ASP Sunil Kumar Shivhare, both accused have been produced in court and taken on remand. The car and cutter machine used in the incident have been seized. Dhaba owner said – both looked scared After committing the murder, both reached Shriji Dhaba located on the highway. They stayed here for about 45 minutes. They had no idea that the CCTV footage of this very dhaba would become the reason for their arrest. Dainik Bhaskar’s team reached Shriji Dhaba. Here, they spoke to the owner and employees. They said that on the day of the incident, a woman and a man came. They looked scared. They first asked for water, then ordered food.
