More than 1.25 crore domestic electricity consumers in Madhya Pradesh may soon face higher power bills, as state-run distribution companies have proposed a 10.19% tariff increase for the financial year 2026–27. The proposal has been submitted to the Madhya Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission (MPERC). If approved, the revised rates will come into effect from April 1, 2026, increasing monthly household expenses across the state. According to estimates, the hike could increase electricity bills by about ₹300 per month for an average household, adding up to more than ₹3,600 annually. For example: A family consuming around 400 units per month currently pays about ₹3,250 With the proposed hike, the bill could rise to over ₹3,550 This means an increase of about ₹300 per month Annually, the additional burden could exceed ₹3,600 per household Power companies said the increase is needed to cover projected losses of ₹6,044 crore. Why power companies want tariff increase Distribution companies in Madhya Pradesh’s east, central and west regions said their financial condition remains weak. They cited the following reasons: Companies said tariff revision is necessary to maintain financial stability and ensure uninterrupted supply. Concerns raised over justification for hike Consumer groups and experts have questioned the timing and logic behind the proposed increase. ₹4,800 crore pending recovery adds to financial pressure Additionally, companies have proposed recovering: Proposal contrasts with government’s earlier statement The proposal comes despite recent assurances by Energy Minister Pradyuman Singh Tomar that efforts were being made to avoid tariff increases. The minister had also said the state aims to bring power companies out of losses by 2028. He noted that nearly one crore consumers receive subsidised electricity under the Atal Griha Jyoti Yojana. Public hearings from 24 February MPERC will hold public hearings from 24 to 26 February. Consumer groups, industry representatives and citizens can present objections and suggestions. The commission will take a final decision after reviewing all submissions. If approved, the new electricity tariffs will take effect from April 1, 2026, affecting household budgets across Madhya Pradesh.
