Following Jonathan Trott’s resignation, the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) is in the final stages of searching for a new coach. Meanwhile, the board’s chief executive, Naseeb Khan, has made it clear that the next head coach and their support staff will have to stay and work in Afghanistan during the off-season. Naseeb Khan said,”We have clearly stated in the coach’s contract that their duty station will be Afghanistan. We want the national team coach to keep a close eye on our domestic cricket and young players.” Three names have been shortlisted in the race for the new coach. Of these, two coaches are from South Africa and one is Asian. Jonathan Trott was the team’s coach since 2022 Trott began his work with the national team in 2022 and led Afghanistan to new heights in international cricket, including major victories against teams like Pakistan and Australia in ICC competitions. Afghanistan reached the semi-finals of the 2024 T20 World Cup, but was eliminated from the group stage this year. Speaking to Cricbuzz, Khan said that the ACB wants the national team coach to keep a close eye on the country’s domestic cricket stars and work on the national team’s weaknesses during the off-season. Khan revealed that the process of finding Trott’s successor has already begun and the new coach will be finalized before the ODI series against Sri Lanka, which will start after the T20 World Cup concludes. The ACB chief said that currently the shortlist includes two names from South Africa and one from Asia, but he decided not to reveal their names. They have shortlisted three coaches and their interviews have also been conducted. After the appointment is finalized, the ACB is expected to announce the new head coach before the Sri Lanka series.
