bhopal-aiims-introduces-ai-navigation-system:nation’s-first-hospital-initiative-to-assist-10–12-thousand-patients-and-attendants-every-day

All India Institute of Medical Sciences Bhopal (AIIMS Bhopal) is set to become the first hospital in India to introduce an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based navigation system to help patients and their attendants find their way across its vast campus. More than 10,000 people visit the hospital daily for treatment, diagnostic tests and consultations. Due to the large campus and identical-looking buildings, visitors often struggle to locate departments, leading to confusion and stress. The new AI-powered system aims to resolve this issue by offering step-by-step digital directions, similar to Google Maps. Why AI navigation was needed AIIMS Bhopal has a sprawling campus with multiple blocks that appear structurally similar. Even regular visitors sometimes find it difficult to navigate between departments such as Pathology, MRI, OPD, Cardiology, Neurosurgery, or wards. First-time visitors often spend significant time searching for the correct department and frequently need to ask staff or security personnel for directions. This not only wastes time but also adds to the anxiety of patients and their families. Deputy Director Dr. Sandesh Jain said that scanning a QR code will instantly inform visitors about the exact direction to reach Cardiology, Amrit Pharmacy, Neurosurgery, Pathology, MRI or a doctor’s chamber. AI-based smart guidance system in development To address the navigation challenges, AIIMS Bhopal has collaborated with the Drishti team of Indian Institute of Technology Indore (IIT Indore). With assistance from a Bhopal-based startup, an AI-powered navigation system is being developed. The system will function much like Google Maps. After scanning a QR code installed within the campus or using the AIIMS mobile app, users can search for the location they wish to visit. The AI system will then provide step-by-step directions to guide them accurately. How the system will work The navigation system will operate in two formats: 1. Web-based QR code system QR codes will be installed at the main entrance and key points across the campus. Upon scanning the QR code, an interactive digital map will open on the user’s mobile phone. The system will provide real-time, step-by-step directions to the selected destination. 2. Mobile app-based navigation Users can download the AIIMS mobile application to directly access the navigation facility. GPS technology will be used to guide movement between buildings. Inside buildings, where GPS accuracy tends to decrease, relay devices will be installed at intervals of every 15 meters. These devices will transmit signals to provide precise indoor navigation, ensuring users reach their destination without confusion. One-month pilot before full implementation Initially, the project will be launched as a one-month pilot programme. During this period, authorities will evaluate the system’s effectiveness and measure the benefits for visitors. If the results are satisfactory, the AI navigation system will be implemented across the entire campus. Officials believe this initiative will save time, reduce crowd pressure and lessen the burden on staff who are frequently asked for directions. Hospital infrastructure at AIIMS Bhopal AIIMS Bhopal has the following bed capacity: Visitor and Patient statistics Key benefits for patients and attendants With this initiative, AIIMS Bhopal is taking a major step toward integrating advanced digital solutions into public healthcare infrastructure, potentially setting a benchmark for hospitals across the country.
