Deputy Leader of Opposition in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly, Hemant Katare, resigned from his post during the ongoing Budget session, citing his inability to devote adequate time to his family and constituents. In his resignation letter, Katare said he was stepping down from the responsibility as he could not give sufficient attention to both his family and the people of his constituency. Katare represents the Ater Assembly constituency in Bhind district. In a letter addressed to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, he expressed gratitude to the party for entrusting him with the position. He said the party was free to assign the responsibility to any other leader and assured his full cooperation with the organisation. “I will always remain grateful that the party considered me worthy of this responsibility,” he wrote. Resignation submitted on wedding anniversary Mr. Katare submitted his resignation on the day of his wedding anniversary. Earlier in the day, he participated in the proceedings of the Madhya Pradesh Assembly and was present in the House until around 4 p.m. Won Ater seat by over 20,000 votes Mr. Katare won the Ater Assembly seat in the 2023 Assembly election, defeating former BJP minister Arvind Bhadauria by a margin of 20,228 votes. He is the son of former Leader of Opposition Satyadev Katare, a senior Congress leader. Hemant Katare was first elected to the Assembly from Ater in 2013 but lost the seat in the 2018 election before regaining it in 2023. Satyadev Katare represented the Ater constituency four times and also served as Home Minister in the Madhya Pradesh government.
