The case of the fire at the Adampur garbage dump in Bhopal has taken a new turn. Madhya Pradesh Chief Secretary Anurag Jain has now been made a respondent in the matter. Along with him, six more people have also been added as respondents. The Supreme Court will hear the case next on February 19. The matter is linked to the National Green Tribunal. In March 2023, environmentalist Dr Subhash C Pandey had filed a petition before the NGT over repeated fire incidents at the Adampur dump. On July 31, 2023, the tribunal imposed a fine of Rs 1.80 crore on the municipal corporation. The municipal corporation later challenged this order in the Supreme Court. The plea was heard on May 16, 2025. During the hearing, the corporation requested that the fine be cancelled. These were made respondents
A hearing is underway in the Supreme Court in this matter. The case was heard two days ago. Environmentalist Dr. Pandey said, this is a historic decision of the Supreme Court. During the hearing, which lasted for about an hour and a half, the bench said that due to numerous ground realities, the constitutional system and process may not be yielding results. The court clearly stated that bringing new rules in 2026 is a welcome step, but it is necessary for responsible institutions to complete preliminary work before implementing them. Otherwise, these new rules will also not bring any improvement in the ground situation. Therefore, it is necessary to provide the essential infrastructure for waste management. Following this, the Supreme Court ordered the inclusion of 6 responsible parties, including the Secretaries of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Panchayati Raj, Housing and Urban Development of the Government of India, and the Chief Secretary of MP, as respondents. 80-page report has also been submitted
Earlier, on May 16, 2025, CPCB (Central Pollution Control Board) had submitted its 80-page report. It found more than 100 times the amount of iron in the water. According to experts, the water here is not suitable not only for drinking but also for growing vegetables and crops. 850 tons are generated daily from Bhopal
According to information, 850 tons of garbage are generated daily in Bhopal. 800 tons reach the landfill for processing. Out of this, 290 tons of waste is soil. The remaining 510 tons is mixed waste. The unit that the corporation has has a capacity of only 420 tons. In the previous hearing, it was accepted that the corporation does not have the capacity to process all the waste. Due to this, a large amount of garbage is accumulating. Because of this, a pile of garbage is forming. Around 12,000 people live near the landfill.
