England made a winning start to their three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka, defeating the hosts by 11 runs under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method in the opening match at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Friday. However, Sam Curran becomes the second English cricketer to record a hat-trick in the T20I format. Earlier, Chris Jordan achieved this feat against the USA in the T20 World Cup 2024. The match was heavily affected by rain, which delayed the start and forced officials to reduce the contest to 17 overs per side. Despite multiple interruptions, England managed to stay ahead of the DLS par score and were declared winners when rain stopped play for the final time. With this victory, England now lead the series 1-0, while Sri Lanka will look to bounce back in the second T20I, scheduled to be played at the same venue on February 1. England bowlers shine after choosing to field After winning the toss, the England captain opted to bowl first, a decision that proved to be spot on.
