Sunrisers Eastern Cape (SEC) showcased their dominance in the SA20, entering the final for the fourth consecutive time on 23 January. The Tristan Stubbs-led side defeated Paarl Royals (PR) in Qualifier 2 to book a spot in the SA20 final. The Sunrisers have now made it to the finals of all four editions of the SA20 so far and will be gunning to win a third title. Stubbs and co will face Pretoria Capitals in the SA20 final which will be played in Cape Town on 25 January. Pretoria Capitals had earlier beaten Sunrisers in Qualifier 1. Kyle Verreynne’s 52 helped Paarl Royals to score 114/7 The Paarl Royals were asked to bat first and all they could manage was 114/7 on a dry pitch at the Wanderers. Sunrisers’ spinners did not allow Paarl Royals’ batsmen to settle down at all. Kyle Verreynne was the only Paarl Royals batter who could make any sort of impact. The wicketkeeper-batter single-handedly took Paarl Royals’ score past 100 by holding one end strongly. His unbeaten 52-run knock came off 46 balls. The pitch had significant turn and uneven bounce, which left-arm spinner Senuran Muthusamy exploited, taking three wickets for just 15 runs in four overs. Meanwhile, James Coles also had an impressive bowling performance, taking one wicket for 15 runs, which included a maiden over. Quinton de Kock hit three fours in the first over and followed it up with two sixes and a four in the next over, giving the team a quick start. However, he was out after scoring 25 runs, but by then the Sunrisers had already taken control of the match. By the end of the powerplay, the team had scored 56 runs, losing 3 wickets. James Coles’ all-round performance James Coles, who was economical in bowling, also showed his prowess in batting. He made the match one-sided by playing an unbeaten innings of 45 runs off just 19 balls. Coles scored heavily against part-time bowlers and hit a six in the 12th over to secure victory for his team. Sunrisers achieved this target with 50 balls remaining. Less turn in the second innings An interesting observation during the match was that the pitch’s nature changed in the second innings. In the first innings, Sunrisers’ spinners were getting an average turn of 5.1 degrees, which was quite significant. However, in the second innings, when Paarl Royals’ spinners came to bowl, the turn decreased to just 1.8 degrees. Due to dew or the pitch settling, it became easier for batsmen to score runs.
