Mad dog dies after biting 40 people in Ujjain:Panic grips Mahidpur area; separate incident sees 12 dogs attack school student in Gwalior

A mad dog bit around 40 people in Ujjain’s Mahidpur town on Wednesday, triggering panic among residents. All the injured rushed to hospitals for treatment one after another. Acting swiftly on the information, a municipal team cordoned off the area and captured the dog. Shortly after being caught, the dog died, which further heightened fear in the locality. Many of the victims who had earlier received treatment returned to hospitals following the dog’s death, concerned about possible infection. The incident occurred in the Tension Chauraha and Kirtaniya Bakhal areas of Mahidpur. Civic body keeps close watch Chief Municipal Officer (CMO) Raja Yadav said the dog was rabid. “A team led by sanitation inspector Umesh Davre managed to catch the dog, but it died later. Our team is closely monitoring the situation, and other dogs in the area are also under surveillance,” he said. Sharp rise in dog-bite cases Mahidpur Medical Officer Dr M.S. Rampure said dog-bite incidents have been rising steadily in the town. “In the past seven days alone, around 80 people have reached the hospital for treatment following dog bites. Earlier, in the Juni Court area and nearby localities, a rabid dog had bitten more than six people,” he said. According to health officials, since December 2025, over 230 dog-bite cases have been reported from Mahidpur city and surrounding rural areas. School student attacked by dogs in Gwalior In a separate incident on Wednesday, a school student was attacked by a group of dogs in Gwalior. The incident took place around 1:30 pm in D-Block of Shatabdipuram Colony, when the child was returning home from school. Nearly 12 pet dogs reportedly chased and attacked the student, who managed to escape by running. The incident was captured on a CCTV camera installed in the colony. The dogs are reportedly owned by a woman living in the neighbourhood. When the victim’s father, Narendra Bhardwaj, raised the issue with her, a dispute broke out. Police intervened and managed to defuse the situation.
