The Vyas couple, who set themselves on fire in Satwas, Dewas district, are undergoing treatment in Indore. They have been in the hospital for five days. Santosh Vyas has 20% burns, while his wife Jaishree has 50% burns. Santosh’s condition is stable and improving, but Jaishree’s condition remains serious. Experts say that burn treatment depends on the percentage and depth of burns. Since this is a case of self-immolation, the severity is higher than in accidental burns. Burn treatment depends on percentage and depth According to Dr Arpit Sethia, doctors check two main factors: how much of the body is burned and how deep the burns are. There are three degrees of burns: first, second, and third. Third-degree burns are very serious and difficult to heal. Difference between accidental burns and self-immolation In accidents, people try to escape, so burns are usually limited. In self-immolation, people pour petrol over themselves and set fire intentionally. They do not try to save themselves. This leads to higher percentage burns and deeper injuries. Santosh Vyas’ current condition Santosh Vyas has 20% burns. He is in a manageable condition. He can move, eat, drink, and speak. Doctors say he may recover in a few days. Jaishree Vyas’ serious condition Jaishree Vyas has 45–50% burns. Her face, throat, windpipe, chest, and lungs are severely affected. This makes her condition critical. She is at high risk of infection, and surgery will be needed. Surgery and skin grafting for deep burns For Jaishree’s deep burns, skin grafting is required. Breathing support due to windpipe and lung burns Jaishree has swelling in her windpipe, making it difficult to breathe. A tube has been inserted through her throat to help her breathe. Her lungs are also filled with smoke, and she is under close monitoring. Hospital care and monitoring Both Santosh and Jaishree are in the burn unit and are being continuously monitored. Since they are over 60 years old, recovery may take longer than usual. Doctors are taking extra care of their wounds and vital organs.
