Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir’s decision to drop Shubman Gill from India’s T20 World Cup 2026 squad has reportedly sparked uncertainty in the dressing room. The BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) announced India’s squad for the T20 World Cup on 20 December, and Gill was surprisingly left out. The right-hander was made India’s T20I vice-captain this year and had regularly featured in the shortest format as an opener. Despite having had a poor run, Gill was backed by the management and his selection for the T20 World Cup looked almost certain before the squad was announced.

Team India players ‘confused’ and ‘insecure’: As per a report in PTI (Press Trust of India), the decision to drop Gill from India’s squad for the T20 World Cup has sparked uncertainty in the dressing room. Several players have been left ‘confused’ and ‘insecure,’ and the report adds that there is a lingering worry in the dressing room, in Gambhir’s tenure, that anyone could be dropped after Gill, India’s Test and ODI captain, was snubbed for the T20 World Cup. The right-hander did not register even a single 50+ score in his last 18 T20I innings. His 47 against Pakistan at the Asia Cup in September remained his highest score in the format this year. In the five-match T20I series against South Africa, Gill managed scores of 4, 0 and 28. Gill, who was made India’s ODI captain this year, is expected to captain India in the three-match ODI series against New Zealand, starting 11 January.
