A video of Vijay Mallya and Lalit Modi, both declared economic offenders in India, is going viral. In the video, Lalit Modi refers to himself and Mallya as India’s two biggest fugitives. The video is from Mallya’s birthday celebration and was posted by Lalit Modi himself. In his post, Lalit wrote, “Let’s shake up the internet again. Especially for you media people. Keep watching with envy.” Mallya is seen smiling alongside his partner, Pinky Lalwani. Meanwhile, the Bombay High Court on Tuesday asked Vijay Mallya when he would return to India. The court stated that Mallya’s petition would not be heard unless he returns to India and comes under the court’s jurisdiction. Mallya has challenged the Fugitive Economic Offenders Act and the decision declaring him a fugitive. Vijay Mallya has been in the UK since 2016 and was officially declared a fugitive economic offender in 2019. Lalit Modi has been living abroad since 2010 and faces serious allegations of tax evasion, money laundering, and other charges related to the IPL. During the hearing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Enforcement Directorate (ED), argued that permission should not be granted to challenge the law while staying abroad. He informed the court that the extradition process of Mallya is in its final stage. Mallya’s counsel claimed that a substantial portion of the banks’ financial dues has already been recovered. However, the court said that criminal liability cannot be brought to an end without appearing before the court. The next hearing in the matter will now take place on February 12.
