A 28-year-old painter died by suicide in Jabalpur after allegedly being beaten by police in public. His family claims the assault, carried out after a domestic dispute, caused deep humiliation and pushed him to take his life. The incident triggered protests, political outrage, and an official inquiry. Man found hanging in Jabalpur Jayraj Chaudhary (28) was found hanging in his room on Friday night in Baba Tola area of Jabalpur. He worked as a painter. His family says he returned home distressed after a police intervention and later died by suicide. Family alleges police assault Family members allege that Hanumantal police beat Jayraj in front of his wife and mother-in-law. They claim this happened at the insistence of the two women. The family says Jayraj could not bear the public humiliation. Protest with body On Saturday, the family staged a protest by keeping the body and refused cremation. They demanded action against the policemen involved, as well as against Jayraj’s wife and mother-in-law. Police officers and revenue officials reached the spot to calm the situation. Dispute over wife’s alleged affair According to the family, Jayraj had a love marriage with Pooja Chaudhary in 2018. They allege that after marriage, Pooja developed a relationship with another man. This led to frequent disputes between the couple. Incident at in-laws’ house About a week ago, after an argument, Pooja went to her maternal home. On Friday, Jayraj went there to meet his daughter but was not allowed to see her. An argument followed, during which Jayraj abused Pooja and her mother. Police were called to the spot. Alleged assault before suicide Family members claim police beat Jayraj during this visit. After returning home, he locked himself in his room. Late at night, when the door did not open, relatives broke it and found him hanging. Family demands strict action Jayraj’s sister-in-law said marital disputes had pushed him towards alcohol. The family demanded suspension of the policemen involved and action against the wife and mother-in-law. They said the body would not be cremated until action was assured. Officials assure investigation Tehsildar Sandeep Jaiswal and senior police officers reached the spot. They assured the family that a probe is underway. Statements are being recorded, and departmental action will be taken if police assault is proven. After this assurance, the family agreed to perform the last rites. MLA questions police role Congress MLA Lakhan Ghanghoria strongly criticised the police. He alleged the death was declared a suicide without proper investigation. He questioned why police went to Jayraj’s house and said any guilty officer should face strict action. Police presence at protest After receiving information about the protest, police teams reached the area. The case remains under investigation, and authorities say all allegations will be examined carefully.
