upi-credit-cards-explained:users-can-make-upi-payments-on-credit-instead-of-using-their-bank-account-and-repay-later-with-interest-free-periods

UPI Credit Cards let users pay via UPI apps or QR codes using credit, while earning rewards and interest-free periods, with transactions regulated by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). The feature lets users make UPI payments using credit instead of bank balances, combining UPI’s wide reach with credit card flexibility, though experts stress the need for responsible use and strong regulation. Convenience and Rewards, With a Caveat Industry leaders agree that the biggest advantage of UPI Credit Cards is seamless access to credit for everyday payments. “UPI Credit Cards combine the convenience of UPI with the flexibility of credit,” said Mahesh Shukla, Founder CEO of PayMe. “Users can make instant payments through familiar UPI apps while still enjoying benefits like rewards and interest-free periods. The wide merchant acceptance makes it highly appealing.” Paramdeep Singh, founder of LongTail Ventures, echoed this view, noting that UPI Credit Cards expand credit usage beyond traditional point-of-sale terminals. “They allow instant QR-based payments while still earning credit card rewards. For frequent digital users, this is a meaningful upgrade.” However, both experts flagged the same concern: overspending. “UPI feels frictionless, and that can reduce transaction visibility,” Singh warned. “Without strong credit discipline, users may end up spending more than they realise.” Who Should Use UPI Credit Cards — and Who Shouldn’t According to experts, UPI Credit Cards are best suited for digitally savvy users who already understand credit cycles. “These products are ideal for salaried or self-employed individuals with regular income and good credit behaviour,” Singh said. “They’re also useful for users who want to consolidate all payments into a single app.” Shukla added that those new to credit should proceed cautiously. “Users unfamiliar with repayment terms or credit limits should first build comfort using debit-based UPI before switching to credit-based payments.” Those with unstable income, weak budgeting habits, or a tendency to carry revolving credit balances may be better off avoiding the product altogether. How Transactions Are Regulated and Monitored UPI Credit Card transactions operate under the RBI and NPCI framework, ensuring regulatory oversight at every stage. “All transactions run through NPCI’s secure network and are monitored in real time,” Shukla said. “Multi-layer verification, fraud detection systems, and compliance checks help safeguard user interests.” Singh explained that banks are also required to report credit exposure to bureaus, while suspicious transactions are flagged automatically under RBI’s fraud-monitoring norms. Legal Framework and the Need for Stronger Safeguards The regulatory foundation for UPI Credit Cards already exists. RBI’s June 2022 circular allowed credit cards—initially RuPay—to be linked with UPI under the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007. However, experts believe additional guardrails are needed as adoption grows. “There is a growing need for clearer fraud-prevention rules, faster dispute resolution, defined transaction limits, and stronger user consent mechanisms,” Shukla said. Singh added that upcoming data protection laws could further strengthen consumer confidence. “Enhancing consent frameworks and privacy safeguards under the Digital Personal Data Protection regime will be key.” Global Expansion Strengthens India’s Fintech Image UPI is no longer limited to India. The payment system is now live in countries including Singapore, UAE, Bhutan, Nepal, Mauritius, Sri Lanka, and France, with pilots underway in markets such as Australia, Oman, and the UK. “Linking credit cards to UPI adds another layer of versatility,” Shukla said. “It shows that UPI can scale beyond payments into a complete financial solution.” Singh agreed, noting that the move strengthens India’s global fintech standing. “It demonstrates how interoperable digital rails can power both payments and credit. Done responsibly, this could position UPI as a global benchmark for inclusive digital finance.” What Lies Ahead Early feedback from consumers suggests strong interest, particularly in faster and simpler credit access. But experts stress that education, transparency, and regulation must evolve alongside innovation. “Customers want simplicity—but they also want clarity,” Shukla said. “Balanced innovation is what will determine the long-term success of UPI Credit Cards.” As India blends credit into its most trusted payments platform, the challenge will be ensuring that ease of use does not come at the cost of financial discipline.
