Veteran actor Dharmendra passed away on Monday. He was a superstar of his time and had a deep connection with Madhya Pradesh. He shot several films in the state and was loved for his simplicity, generosity, and dedication to his craft. Locals and co-workers remember his kindness, humour, and memorable contributions to cinema. Shooting memories in Mandu Dharmendra first came to Mandu in 1975 for the film Kinara and returned in 1984 for Jeene Nahi Doonga. In Kinara, about 70 percent of the film, including four hit songs, was shot at Jahaz Mahal. For Jeene Nahi Doonga, he stayed at Taveli Mahal Rest House and Malwa Retreat for 22 days. During his free time, Dharmendra often went out alone to explore Mandu. He met fans, posed for photographs, and interacted with locals in a simple, friendly manner. Dual role in Jeene Nahi Doonga Jeene Nahi Doonga, released on 26 October 1984, was directed by Rajkumar Kohli. Dharmendra played a dual role in the film. Co-stars included Shatrughan Sinha, Raj Babbar, Anita Raj, and Roshni. The famous song Tum Yaad Na Aaya Karo was also filmed in Mandu. Paan and Tamarind Memories Pandit Kedarnath, who ran a paan shop in Mandu for 55 years, recalled that Dharmendra and Shatrughan Sinha would come daily for paan during shooting. Kedarnath said Dharmendra was humble and friendly, always speaking to locals without hesitation. Rupa Loda, who sold tamarind near Jahaz Mahal, remembered how Dharmendra tried it and liked the taste. He even took five tamarinds home after filming. Somnath Tiwari noted that Dharmendra also helped poor people in the area. Films shot in Maheshwar Dharmendra shot Yamla Pagla Deewana (2011) and Yamla Pagla Deewana-2 (2013) in Maheshwar, on the banks of the Narmada in Khargone district. Nearly half of both films were shot there. Although the films showed Banaras, Maheshwar’s ghats, forts, and streets were clearly recognisable. In the films, Dharmendra played the generous Paramveer Dhillon. He wore a colourful scarf, conspired with Bobby Deol’s character, and had key scenes with Sunny Deol by the Narmada river.
