There could be relief from the large annual increases in health insurance premiums. The government has brought several proposals for this. These include limiting agent commission to 20% and controlling package rates for hospital treatments. Currently these proposals have been sent to insurance regulator IRDAI, on which decisions are pending. The Finance Ministry had held meetings with insurance company CEOs, owners of large hospitals and IRDAI officials. In this, the Finance Ministry expressed displeasure over arbitrary annual increases in health insurance premiums. It was stated that medical inflation in India is reaching 11.5%, which is highest in the world. This is not right, and the government is going to take some steps to get rid of this. Health Insurance Premium On Rise Every Year Central Government will reduce medical expenses in three ways 1. Limited Premium Increase: Annual increase in premium will be capped. This means insurance companies cannot arbitrarily increase health insurance premiums every year. 2. Lower Agent Commission: Agent commission on new health insurance policies should be maximum 20%. On annual renewal, this commission should not exceed 10%. 3. More Transparency: Every claim, every hospital bill and every discharge summary must be completely transparent. Insurance companies and hospitals cannot arbitrarily set ‘package rates’ together. Central Government will also introduce National Health Claims Exchange Hospitals opposed the government proposal saying their margin is already low. Insurance companies increase premiums but are stingy in giving claims. On this, the Finance Ministry official said that this is why the National Health Claims Exchange is being introduced, where everything will be digital.
