In Morena district, the Jaura court has sentenced 14 people to ten years in prison for supplying poisonous liquor. The deadly incident, which happened in January 2021, claimed 24 lives. The court also imposed fines of Rs 1.32 lakh on 11 accused and Rs 1.07 lakh on three others. The tragic incident On 10 January 2021, villagers of Chhaira Manpur consumed cheap local liquor. The liquor was poisoned with methyl alcohol. Over three days, 24 people died. Many lost their eyesight before dying. Court verdict after 5 years The case took five years to reach a verdict. Jaura’s Additional Sessions Judge Indrajeet Raghuvanshi found all 14 accused guilty. Each has been sentenced to ten years imprisonment. The court imposed fines alongside the jail term. Who received the punishment The following accused received ten years imprisonment and Rs 1.32 lakh fine each: Three others received ten years imprisonment and Rs 1.07 lakh fine each: Proof and investigation The court accepted the viscera report confirming methyl alcohol in the liquor. Samples were tested in Indore and Gwalior. The police investigation proved all charges. Police and security A heavy police force was deployed in court during the verdict. The accused were taken to Ambah court under police supervision. After the tragedy After 24 people died, the administration took strict action. Large quantities of liquor were found abandoned in fields, roads, and drains. The police registered cases under IPC sections 420, 465, 470, 471, and 473. The state government removed Morena’s then Collector Anurag Verma and SP Anurag Sujania following the incident.
