no-india-vs-pakistan-clash-at-the-la-2028-olympics?:latest-icc-statement-after-dubai-board-meeting-reveals-new-qualification-rule-for-t20i-teams

Cricket will soon make a comeback to the Olympics in 2028 after a century; however, there might not be an iconic India vs Pakistan clash at the coveted event. The update has come up after the recently concluded International Cricket Council (ICC) Board meeting at Dubai on Friday. The apex board concluded that only six teams would be able to participate in the prestigious event. Meanwhile, the board also confirmed how these teams will be selected for the Los Angeles 2028 games. Top team from each continent/region to make the final cut During its recent Board meeting, the global cricket body confirmed that six teams each from both men’s and women’s categories will feature in cricket’s first appearance at the Games since the Paris Olympics,1900. For now, ICC is mulling over the idea of picking up the Top 6 teams as per the ICC T20I rankings. However, as per Times of India report, this idea is expected to stay at rest. The chances are that it will now be an arrangement where the top team from each region/continent will get selected, and the sixth team will come through a global qualifier. As per media insider in ICC administration: There have been discussions around the participation of teams, and it has been decided that the six teams will come through the top-ranked team from each region/continent, while the sixth comes from the global qualifier. The details will be shared by the ICC in due course, but the roadmap has more or less been frozen. The arrangement means every top side from each continent/region will make the first five teams. Which teams can qualify for LA 2028 Olympics as per the current setup? Based on current rankings, India can qualify from Asia, Australia from Oceania, England from Europe, and South Africa from Africa. However, it will be worth watching if the USA is able to participate, considering the poor form of cricket in the nation. However, despite the disappointing condition of the cricket there, the US is hosting the event, so there might be some modifications there. Iconic India vs Pakistan might not happen at LA 2028! There’s a strong possibility of not witnessing an India vs Pakistan match at LA28, as the details of the global qualifier are still not revealed. Since only one top team can make the cut from the continent/region, India stands as the undisputed contender from Asia. The ICC media release further stated, “The Board reviewed the ICC’s ongoing engagement with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games (LA28), as cricket deepens its footprint in the global multisport landscape. At LA28, both the men’s and women’s T20 events will feature six teams each, comprising 28 matches in total.” Considering the recent success of women’s cricket, the ICC is also serious about the inclusion of six teams in women’s T20I as well for the LA 2028 Olympics.
