After the US imposed new sanctions on Russian oil, a ship carrying Russian crude oil en route to India suddenly made a U-turn. According to ship-tracking data, this large vessel named ‘Furia’ was heading towards India on Tuesday via a route between Denmark and Germany. This ship was carrying oil sold by Russia’s state-owned oil company Rosneft. This U-turn incident occurred exactly one week after the US blacklisted Russian oil companies Rosneft and Lukoil. The US Treasury Department had announced sanctions on these two companies on October 22, instructing companies and banks. Tanker was expected at India’s Sikka Port According to Bloomberg, the Furia tanker loaded approximately 7,30,000 barrels of ‘Urals crude’ from Russia’s Baltic port of Primorsk on October 20. Initially, the ship had declared its destination as Sikka port in Gujarat, used by Reliance Industries and Bharat Petroleum. The ship was expected to reach India by mid-November. Ship suddenly changed route Later, the ship changed its destination to Port Said, Egypt. The fastest route from Russia to India is through the Suez Canal, so ships often declare Port Said as their destination before passing through the Suez Canal. Ship’s age could also be the reason for the U-turn The Furia tanker has already been banned by the European Union (EU) and the UK. Its age is also a problem. This tanker will turn 23 this year, whereas the normal limit for oil tankers is around 18 years.
