A farmer, identified as 50-year-old Kailash Meena, committed suicide on Wednesday in Sirsod village of Sheopur district. His body was found hanging from a tree in the field. According to villagers, Kailash had cultivated paddy on about nine bighas of land, but continuous rainfall over the past three days had caused severe waterlogging, leading to his crop rotting in the field. Family members said Kailash was distressed over the loss of his crop, which had been grown with expensive seeds and fertilizers. Villagers took the body to hospital Kailash had left home early in the morning for his field. Later, villagers spotted him hanging from a tree and brought his body down. He was taken to the district hospital, where doctors declared him dead. After receiving information, police and administrative officials reached the hospital. The police conducted a post-mortem and prepared a panchnama before handing over the body to the family. MLA demands ₹50 lakh compensation When police officials were preparing to send the body home by ambulance, Sheopur Congress MLA Babu Jandel arrived at the district hospital with party workers. He met the deceased’s family and demanded ₹50 lakh in compensation from the administration. The MLA said that continuous rains had devastated farmers across the district and urged the government to announce immediate relief measures. During this time, the MLA and his supporters stopped the ambulance, saying the body would not be taken to the village until compensation was announced. Police officials later managed to persuade them, and the body was finally sent to the village. Road blocked, protest continues As the body reached Sirsod village, villagers placed it on the road and blocked traffic to press their demand for financial assistance. A large number of farmers, women, and elderly villagers, along with local Congress leaders, joined the protest led by MLA Babu Jandel. The villagers said they would not perform the last rites until the government announces adequate compensation and provides employment to one family member of the deceased. Heavy police force deployed A heavy police force has been deployed in the area to maintain order. The SDM and tehsil officials are in talks with the villagers to find a resolution. The administration is trying to persuade the protesters to end the blockade and perform the funeral. As of now, the protest continues, and negotiations remain underway.
