Relief for Vodafone Idea from Supreme Court:Allows central gov to reconsider AGR dues; 10% surge in VI’s shares

Telecom company Vodafone Idea (VI), grappling with a financial crisis, has received significant relief from the Supreme Court. On Monday, the Court allowed the central government to reconsider VI’s Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) dues. The Court stated that this decision falls within the policy ambit of the central government, and therefore, the government cannot be prevented from doing so. A bench led by Chief Justice B.R. Gavai passed this order after hearing the arguments of Solicitor General Tushar Mehta. Mehta informed the Court that if Vodafone Idea shuts down, consumers will face difficulties. He argued that customers also face problems like duplicate billing or extra billing, which makes it necessary to re-examine the calculation of AGR dues. Previously, the Supreme Court had stated that the Department of Telecommunications (DoT)’s calculation of AGR dues would be final, and companies could not dispute or demand a re-examination of it. Following the relief from the Supreme Court, Vodafone Idea’s shares rose by up to 10%. By 12 PM, the share reached ₹10.57. However, by the market close, it closed at the ₹10 level with a gain of about 4%. Why did Vodafone Idea want a re-examination? Vodafone Idea had demanded that the DoT (Department of Telecommunications) cancel the additional AGR dues of ₹5,606 crore or conduct a complete re-examination of them. The company stated that there were mathematical errors in DoT’s assessment for the year 2016-17. What is AGR?
