The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has appointed its current Test captain Shan Masood as Consultant for International Cricket and Player Affairs, entrusting him with a new administrative responsibility. Before Masood, the PCB had not given a role of this level to any active international player. Masood could become Director International Cricket The PCB stated that this position has been given temporarily and Masood could eventually be made Director International Cricket. This role is a senior administrative position in most cricket boards. The PCB is already inviting applications for this position, with the deadline set for November 2. According to ESPNcricinfo, Masood will currently handle this work on an interim (cricketer) basis. Former Director Usman Wahla was suspended Previously, Usman Wahla held this position, having been appointed in May 2023. However, the PCB suspended him after a handshake controversy with Team India during the Asia Cup in September. Actually, during the toss in the Asia Cup league match, Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav did not shake hands with the Pakistani captain. This move by the Indian captain was in protest against the terrorist attack in Pahalgam. PCB alleged that Usman Wahla delayed filing a complaint regarding this handshake controversy, whereas he should have taken action at the time of the toss. PCB has not yet given any official statement on his status. It is being reported that the information about Shan Masood’s new appointment was given to the players and Wahla at a dinner hosted by the Prime Minister, which was in honor of the South African team. PCB’s statement unclear, questions about captaincy remain In its official statement, PCB did not clarify how long Masood would hold this position and whether he would remain the Test captain or not. Mixed performance as captain Masood has been Pakistan’s Test captain for the last two years. During his tenure, Pakistan has won only one Test series so far (against England). He became the first Pakistani captain to lose a Test series against Bangladesh. Under his leadership, Pakistan has played a total of 14 Tests. Of which, 10 were lost, 4 were won. Active player’s administrative role: Conflict of interest possible Masood’s new role also raises several questions. As an active player, he will now also look into the matters of players with whom he himself plays or whom he selects. Cricket experts believe that this could lead to a conflict of interest situation.
