In the coming days at the e-commerce company Amazon, robots could replace more than 5,00,000 jobs. This means robots will handle warehouse tasks like picking, packing and delivery, reducing the need for humans. This information has come to light in a New York Times report. The report states that since 2018, Amazon’s US workforce has tripled to approximately 1.2 million (12 lakh). However, due to automation, new hirings may now be halted. Amazon executives told the board that despite projections to double sales by 2033, robotic automation could keep the company’s hiring curve flat. This means Amazon won’t need to hire more than 5,00,000 additional employees. Estimated savings of ₹1 lakh crore by 2027 Internal documents have revealed that these robots will save up to 30 cents (approximately ₹3.3) in picking, packing and delivering each item. Total savings between 2025 and 2027 could be $12.6 billion (approximately ₹1 lakh crore). Plan to automate 75% of operations Amazon’s plan is to build warehouses where fewer humans work. These warehouses will be designed for superfast delivery. The company’s robotics team’s final plan is to automate 75% of operations. Amazon says – Documents received by NYT are incomplete Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel said, “The documents received by NYT are incomplete. They don’t show the company’s full hiring strategy. This is just one group’s view.” She also mentioned that they will hire 2,50,000 staff for the holiday season, but didn’t say how many would be permanent. Amazon’s Global Operations Head, Udit Madan, said in an interview, “Efficiency in one area is not the complete story. It’s our old tradition that we create new jobs with money saved from automation. For example, we recently opened more delivery depots in rural areas. Meaning, the company is saying that if money is saved from robots, jobs will come to new places.” Post navigation Govt drafts new IT rules to prevent cyber fraud:Guidelines require uploading platforms to clearly state whether content is AI-generated, deepfake or real Satya Nadella earns ₹847 crore in FY25:Microsoft CEO’s earnings rise 22% annually; AI is major driver of the tech company’s growth
