How to check whether gold jewellery is real or fake?:Things to consider before buying ornaments from stores online

Gold prices have fallen ₹ per 10 grams (gm), recently. Diwali is over! Dhanteras is over! And now there is a small lean patch before the wedding season kicks-off from November. Planning to cash in on the slight correction in yellow metal prices? Planning to buy a gold jewellery ornament online or from a store but worried about the purity of that item? Lets find out how you can ensure that the gold jewellery bought is real: The India Bullion and Jewellers Association (IBJA), spokesperson, Surendra Mehta, says that citizens need to undertake following measures to ensure the authenticity of ornament bought: 1. Buy only BIS certified jewellery The buyer needs to ensure that the ornament is BIS certified. This would establish the fact that the jeweller had obtained certification from the the national standards body of India for sale of that item. How to find out whether that item is BIS certified or not? The body’s logo would be encypted on the ornament. If it is there, then, this is one of the key criterion to ensure BIS’s certification. 2. Obtain bill: The IBJA, spokesperson, has advised buyers to ensure to collect the bill from the store from where he or she has purchased the ornament. 3. Verify product from BIS care app: And now the most imperative thing, the government’s BIS care app. As every ornament has a hallmark ID encrypted on it. The buyer needs to verify the authenticity of the ID. For this, he needs to download the BIS care app and enter the six digit Hallmark Unique Identification Number (HUID) in the app under the ‘Verify HUID’ option. What is Hallmark ID? This is a six digit alpha numeric hallmark ID encrypted on the jewellery. Just like Aadhaar card has a 12-digit code, gold has a 6-digit hallmark code. This number can be alphanumeric, something like AZ4524. Through hallmarking, it becomes possible to determine how many carats a gold piece is made of. Step by step process on how to check purity on BIS care app: The app would then fetch the verification results along with following details: 4. Ensure about after sales and exchange/sale of jewellery: The customer must also enquire with the retailer whether if already has gold lying at his home that could be exchanged with the jewellery he would buy or not. The ornament’s price would be substantially reduced if he buys it on exchange. As mentioned above, every ornament has to have a BIS logo, a hallmark ID and the jeweller’s code. These three things the buyer has to check out while purchasing the ornament.
