Tragedy unfolded in the Aishbag area of Bhopal on Diwali on Monday, as a teenage boy lost his life in a road accident, the police said. The boy, on-board an e-rickshaw, died after the vehicle overturned, and the incident was caught on the CCTV cameras installed in the locality, as per police. If the police are to be believed, the vehicle had been ferrying Plaster of Paris (POP) and other construction materials, which led it to turn turtle, crushing the teenager beneath it. Victim identified as Arhaan Khan Aishbag police station house officer (SHO) VBS Sengar told Bhaskar English that the boy who died has been identified as Arhaan Khan. He added that Khan was travelling with his companion Naved, who was driving the e-rickshaw loaded with POP moulds and metal angles. Due to the excess weight and imbalance, the vehicle toppled near Sonia Nagar at around 4 pm on Monday. Arhaan died on the spot after being trapped under the overturned load. Body handed over to kin after autopsy The body was sent to the Hamidia Hospital mortuary for autopsy, and was handed over to Khan’s family on Tuesday morning. Relatives claimed Arhaan was only a passenger, but the police investigation suggests that both boys worked together in POP installation and transport. Driver flees spot after the crash The driver, identified as Naved, fled the scene after the crash, according to the police. However, the police learnt that he may also have sustained injuries and could possibly be receiving treatment at a private hospital. “Efforts to trace him are underway,” SHO Sengar said. Incident caught on CCTV Police sources said CCTV footage from the vicinity shows the e-rickshaw speeding moments before losing control and toppling. Within seconds, the vehicle overturned, spilling materials onto the road. The accident caused chaos as locals rushed to the site. However, amid the commotion, no one could note down the vehicle’s registration number. The police are now reviewing CCTV footage from nearby areas to identify the exact vehicle and confirm ownership.
