Seven body donations in four days across Madhya Pradesh:Guard of Honour inspires awareness as Indore leads in cadaver donation in state

In the past four days alone, seven body donations have taken place across Madhya Pradesh, reflecting a growing public commitment to the cause of body donation. Indore, already at the forefront of organ donation in the state, continues to lead with a notable increase in cadaver donations since the government’s decision to honour donors with a Guard of Honour during handovers. Officials from MGM Medical College say this symbolic recognition, announced by Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on July 1, has brought a visible change in social awareness and participation. With more than 15 body donations already recorded in Indore since July, officials estimate the total could cross 100 donations by year-end. Families fulfil last wish of donors On October 18 (Saturday), the eyes, skin, and body of Leela Kale, a resident of Vasudev Nagar, Indore, and a former teacher at Ahilya Ashram School, were donated after her demise. Two years ago, she had formally pledged to donate her body through the social organization Dadhichi Mission. Honouring her wish, the Kale family carried out her final act of generosity, donating her eyes to the MY Hospital Eye Bank, skin to the Choithram Skin Bank, and her body to MGM Medical College for anatomical study. Similarly, on October 16 (Thursday), 81-year-old Digambar Kopargaonkar, a resident of Shivsagar Colony, Indore, donated his eyes, skin, and body in accordance with his last wish. His family fulfilled his pledge with dignity, and he too was accorded a Guard of Honour by the Madhya Pradesh Police. State honour boosts awareness Since the implementation of the state honour policy for organ and body donors on July 1, public response has increased significantly. Officials say the gesture not only offers comfort to grieving families but also creates awareness and pride in society about the value of donation. Families feel a sense of peace when they see their loved ones honoured for contributing to society even in death.
