What appeared to be common symptoms such as abdominal pain and fatigue turned out to be a life-threatening illness for a 25-year-old man. Doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bhopal treated the man suffering from Extra Hepatic Portal Vein Obstruction (EHPVO), a rare congenital disease that blocks blood flow in the veins, putting fatal pressure on the liver and digestive system. Doctors perform innovative ‘life-saving bypass’ The Surgical Gastroenterology team at the institute removed the patient’s swollen spleen and created a new blood flow route by connecting the splenic and kidney veins, a unique procedure termed a “life-saving bypass”. As per the institute authorities, this bypass diverts the blocked blood pathways, restoring normal circulation. The innovative technique, as per the institute authorities, was developed by AIIMS specialists and has been hailed as a medical breakthrough. The patient has now made a full recovery, the doctors told Bhaskar English. Complex surgery offers new medical direction The medical team performed the rare and intricate surgery using the “Splenorectomy and Proximal Splenorenal Shunt” technique. The patient’s enlarged spleen was removed, and the splenic vein was connected to the left renal vein. This bypass immediately reduced pressure on the liver and normalised blood flow. According to doctors, the technique could also serve as a life-saving option for complex heart and liver conditions in the future. Man gets a new lease of life The young patient had struggled with abdominal pain, bleeding, and severe fatigue since childhood. Doctors said he had suffered repeated episodes of bleeding due to oesophageal varices. After surgery, his haemoglobin and platelet levels stabilised.Dr Pravesh Mathur, Assistant Professor of Surgical Gastroenterology, noted, “This was not just surgery, but a scientific experiment that gives a new direction to understanding human complexity.” Post navigation MP Evening Wrap:SC allows green crackers in Delhi-NCR during Diwali; Lokayukta raids retired excise officer’s 8 properties in MP more 5 held for stealing plasma from AIIMS blood bank:1,100 units valued at Rs 12 lakh recovered; accused sold it across different states
