In Indore, a 72-year-old mother, Ganga Verma, donated her kidney to her 46-year-old son, Kamlesh Verma, whose both kidneys had failed three years ago. After the transplant, both mother and son are completely healthy and have been discharged. Doctors and society are amazed by the elderly mother’s physical strength and spirit. Family background Kamlesh Verma, a resident of Sadar Bazar, runs a laundry business. His family includes wife Pushpa, son Jai (11), mother Ganga (72), and father Omprakash Verma (75). He also has two married sisters. Kamlesh’s elder brother, Vijay, is an advocate and lives in Jaora. Kamlesh does not have any addiction, but his health started deteriorating in 2022. Neither ever fell ill, nor had any surgery
After mother Ganga’s consent, all tests were conducted, and the kidney matched. It was also found that she has no disease, including blood pressure and diabetes. All medical parameters, including hemoglobin, are fit. She neither ever fell seriously ill nor had any surgery. Overall, all reports came back normal. Under the guidance of Dean Dr. Arvind Ghanghoria, a team of doctors, including Associate Professor Dr. Vishal Kirti Jain (Urology, MGM Medical College) and Associate Professor Dr. Ritesh Kumar Banode (Nephrology Department), prepared a transplant plan for September 30 under kidney match and legal process. This plan was executed in three steps. The first was Pre-operative Assessment, the second Intra-operative Management, and the third Post-operative Management. All relevant tests were conducted in all three steps to ensure there were no problems or complications. Continuous monitoring in ICU
Since both surgeries (receiver and donor) had to be performed simultaneously, the surgery team and anesthesia team were fully prepared. After 3 hours of surgery, the biggest problem in the ICU is rejection, which was continuously monitored. Special focus was placed on the patient’s urine output, kidney function, and creatinine. All medical points were excellent in all three steps. After a week, mother Ganga was discharged. Patient Kamlesh was discharged on October 13. During this, both and their family members expressed gratitude towards the doctors. During this time, Maa Ganga’s demeanor was completely natural. Dr. Ritesh Kumar Banode, Associate Professor Nephrologist at MGM Medical College, said that the age of the pre-plan donor (mother) being 72 years was certainly a consideration. Then, when her physical activity was assessed, it was found that she walks a lot and does household chores herself. She has no problem climbing stairs, nor does she get breathless, nor does she have any heart-related or other ailments. The special reason was that her tests were normal, so there was no problem.
