In Narmadapuram, a Tehsildar’s driver slapped a farmer at the grain market on Monday, triggering a ruckus among around 3,000 farmers waiting since 4 AM for urea tokens. The incident occurred when Tehsildar Sarita Malviya’s car was reversing and a farmer asked the driver to be careful, after which the driver angrily slapped him. The matter calmed only after the Tehsildar apologised and promised action against the driver. Following the incident, farmers’ anger grew, and they demanded the driver be held accountable immediately. As tensions rose, the police secured the driver in a room to calm the situation. The Tehsildar said that the driver’s vehicle is contracted, his contract will be terminated immediately, and an FIR will be registered against him. After this, the farmers’ anger subsided. Since morning, a huge crowd had gathered at the mandi for fertilizer tokens, with around 2,700 farmers expected to receive urea in 8–10 days. Police were deployed due to the large, disorganised crowd. Farmers complained that many who received tokens 15 days ago still haven’t received fertilizer and demanded that distribution return to village-level societies to avoid such problems.
