Indian wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel made headlines with his maiden Test century, scoring a brilliant 125 runs against West Indies at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. His knock played a key role in India’s dominant win by an innings and 140 runs in the opening Test of the series. The achievement brought immense joy to his father, Nemchand Jurel, who expressed pride in his son’s success. While he admitted to feeling slightly disappointed that Dhruv has not always received enough opportunities despite being part of the squad, he said with pride, “It’s a moment of pride for the family when people call me ‘Dhruv’s papa’.” Speaking about his son’s future, Nemchand sounded confident and optimistic. He said Dhruv is ready to perform in every format and, with hard work, will secure his spot in the ODI team as well. His belief now seems closer to reality as Dhruv has earned his maiden call-up to the Indian ODI side for the upcoming Australia tour. QA format conversation with Dhruv’s father Question: Dhruv has been in the Test team for a long time, but got few chances in playing XI. How do you see this? Answer: Look, Dhruv is a wicketkeeper-batter. Before him, Rishabh Pant has already secured his place. Pant is performing excellently. Both of us (me and Dhruv) also believe that if a good batsman or wicketkeeper is already playing, then they should get the opportunity. He has told me many times that he will prove himself when given the chance. This is how cricket works – those who perform well get more opportunities. Dhruv is doing well in both his batting and keeping. He has established his place as a backup wicketkeeper in the team. We are happy when he gets a chance in the playing eleven. Answer: He is fully ready to play as a batter. However, it depends on the selectors whether he fits into the team composition and format or not. Question: Jurel has joined the red ball setup. How do you view white ball cricket? Answer: After working hard for Test cricket, he has secured his place in Team India’s Test team. If he continues to work hard, he will definitely secure a place in the white ball team as well. Question: How has the family changed after Dhruv became an international cricketer? Answer: The only difference is that today our son is playing wearing India’s jersey. This is the biggest happiness for us. Otherwise, everyone in the family is happy and proud. Answer: What could be a bigger joy for a father than being identified through his son? This is my biggest achievement. When I go to office and there’s an India match going on, and Dhruv is playing, everyone is happy, they congratulate me and send their blessings. Many times people say, look, Dhruv’s father has come.
