Two brothers lost their lives after being struck by a goods train near the Mudna Bridge railway track in Shahdol in the early hours of Wednesday. The younger brother had reportedly attempted suicide, while the elder brother tried to intervene, resulting in both being hit by the train. Incident details The accident occurred around 3 am on Tuesday night, according to the Government Railway Police (GRP). The deceased have been identified as Suresh Soni (32) and Sachin Soni (35), residents of Purani Basti, Shahdol. Suresh worked at the Medical College Shahdol bicycle stand, and Sachin was a daily wage laborer. Suresh had married on April 20 this year. Family dispute triggers tragedy GRP Station In-Charge R.M. Jharia stated that the incident stemmed from a domestic dispute. On Tuesday night, Suresh had an argument with his wife and left the house in distress. He went to a Durga Pandal, where his elder brother Sachin was present. Suresh reportedly told Sachin, “I don’t want to live; I will end my life.” Despite Sachin’s efforts to calm him down, Suresh walked toward the railway track on the Mudna River Bridge. Sachin followed him, attempting to prevent the suicide. Sequence of events At the bridge, Suresh lay down on the tracks, ignoring Sachin’s calls to get up. A goods train from Katni direction approached the scene. Sachin pulled Suresh out of the track in time but was struck by the train himself and died on the spot. Shocked by the death of his elder brother, Suresh jumped in front of the moving train, sustaining critical injuries. He was immediately rushed to Jabalpur Medical Hospital, but succumbed to his injuries en route near Umaria. Police action The GRP has registered a murder-cum-accidental death case and is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. Authorities are looking into whether there was any negligence in railway safety and the sequence of events leading to the tragedy.
