The case of a young woman found dead in the river in Rajgarh has been officially declared a suicide. Earlier, her family had alleged gangrape and called it a case of “love jihad,” sparking tension in the area. Hindu organisations had gheraoed the local police station, shut down markets, and demanded that the houses of the accused be bulldozed. Additional forces were deployed from across the district to control the situation. Based on CCTV footage, call records, and the post-mortem report, the police confirmed there was no evidence of rape or murder. The investigation revealed a dispute related to a love affair between the woman, 20-year-old Kajal Jat, and her boyfriend, Arshad. An FIR has been registered against Arshad and his two friends, Monu Raja and Arbaz alias Aloo, for abetment to suicide. All three have been taken into custody and are being interrogated. Past relationship and recent dispute Kajal and Arshad first met while studying in school, where they fell in love. Kajal married two years ago in Dewas, but she maintained contact with Arshad whenever she visited her parents’ house. Recently, Arshad married another woman. On September 27, he sent his brother Asif to collect a phone he had gifted Kajal. Kajal and Arshad spoke for about half an hour during the exchange, which led to an argument. CCTV footage showed her walking alone towards the river at around 7 PM on September 27. She then committed suicide by jumping into the river. Kajal’s body was recovered on September 29 at a stop dam in Pachore, Rajgarh district. Post-mortem and police findings Additional SP KL Banjare confirmed that the post-mortem report showed no signs of sexual assault or foul play. The investigation team thoroughly examined all aspects of the case, including CCTV footage and phone records, which corroborated the sequence of events leading to Kajal’s death. Following persuasion by police officers, the protests and market shutdowns in the area were called off.
