Jai Adivasi Yuva Shakti (JAYS) members continued their protest in Indore against the infamous “rat attack” incident at Maharaja Yashwant Rao (MY) Hospital on Sunday. An indefinite Dharna had been ongoing at the hospital gate for a week, demanding the removal of the Dean and Superintendent and registration of an FIR against them. When their demands were not met, the activists gathered at the hospital gate on Sunday afternoon. They assembled near the Mahatma Gandhi statue, shouted slogans, and then marched semi-nude toward the Collectorate. The incident traces back to 30 August, when two newborns died after being bitten by rats at MY Hospital. See 4 pictures of the protest… Dharna suspended until High Court hearing JAYS has temporarily suspended its Dharna until the High Court hearing. At the Collectorate, SDM Roshan Rai informed the protesters that the matter falls under state-level jurisdiction. The High Court has taken cognizance, with the next hearing scheduled for 6 October. When activists returned to MY Hospital, the hospital gates were closed, and heavy police presence was deployed. JAYS members staged a road protest before authorities convinced them to suspend their demonstration until 6 October. Demands for accountability The protest is specifically over the death of a tribal newborn from the village of Rupa Pada in Dhar, whose body was allegedly bitten by rats at MY Hospital. Activists demand the suspension of the Dean, Superintendent, and other responsible officials, and the registration of a case for culpable homicide. JAYS state president Pawan Dawar said that the administration was informed on 6 September, but despite repeated assurances, no action has been taken. The group also seeks compensation of Rs 1 crore each for the families of the deceased babies and strict measures to prevent such incidents in the future. Protest timeline The demonstrations began last Sunday (21 September) at the hospital gate. Activists reportedly maintained their protest even at 1:30 am. They stated that they would continue the dharna until their demands were met.
