Indore-based PhD scholar Dr. Rohini Ghavari, who accused Chandrashekhar Azad, Member of Parliament from Nagina, Uttar Pradesh, and founder of the Bhim Army, of sexual harassment, has threatened to end her life. Rohini currently resides in Switzerland. On Wednesday afternoon, around 2 PM, Rohini posted a suicide threat on the social media platform X, making three posts over four hours. In one post, she shared a photograph of Chandrashekhar Azad with his wife and children and wrote, You are celebrating while destroying my life. Today, I will take poison in your name. You have ruined me. She also tagged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the PMO, adding, Do not bring my body back to India. Nobody heard me. Everyone sided with the criminal. This is my final goodbye… First read all three X posts by Rohini… Earlier plea to PM Modi Two days prior, Rohini had tagged PM Modi on X, writing, Dear Narendra Modi, the greatest stain of your tenure will be if a Valmiki Dalit daughter of India, exhausted from seeking justice, ends her life at the United Nations. I was not allowed to fight for self-respect in my own country. Delhi Police kept protecting the accused, and I could not even file an FIR due to dirty politics. The system only listens to the powerful, not to the poor or marginalized victims. Who will hear the voices of self-respecting daughters? Wait for my final goodbye. Maybe after my death, the voices of daughters will be heard. Jai Hind, Jai Bharat, Jai Constitution, Jai Bhim, Jai Valmiki. Rohini speaks to media: No justice at home In an interview with Dainik Bhaskar, Rohini explained her distress, I met Delhi Police Commissioner several times and submitted all evidence, but nothing is being done. Airport police also investigated, but the influence of Chandrashekhar prevented any action. I am extremely distressed. What choice do I have besides ending my life? Until one attempts suicide, nobody listens. Every time I speak to the commissioner, I am told there is no order from above. The media outlet also appealed to Rohini not to take any self-harming steps. Background of the sexual harassment allegations Three months ago, Rohini publicly accused Chandrashekhar Azad of sexual harassment on social media. She subsequently filed a formal complaint with the National Commission for Women (NCW). Rohini stated that a legal process had begun and asserted: “The truth will come out. I will fight for my dignity and self-respect and will not back down.” Personal and academic background Dr. Rohini Ghavari is the daughter of a cleaning staff employee at Bima Hospital, Indore. She went to Switzerland in 2019 for higher education. During her studies, she became acquainted with Chandrashekhar Azad, and the two maintained a relationship for three years. Rohini later accused him of sexual harassment and emotional manipulation. Currently, she works in Switzerland and also runs an NGO focused on social causes. Complaint submitted to NCW In her formal complaint, Rohini wrote: I am a social activist and a woman from the Scheduled Caste (Valmiki community). I submit this complaint with immense pain and hope for justice. In 2020, I got admission for PhD in Geneva, Switzerland, funded by Madhya Pradesh government scholarships. During this period, I met Chandrashekhar Azad, MP from Nagina. From June 2021, we had continuous communication. He assured me he was unmarried and seeking a life partner like me. He misled me emotionally, claiming he would marry me and persuaded me to actively participate in his political campaigns. He repeatedly coerced me into physical relations under false promises of marriage. His actions abused my trust, devotion, and loyalty, leaving me socially defamed and deeply depressed. I even attempted suicide twice. She urged the authorities to take strict action against Chandrashekhar Azad to ensure justice for her and to prevent similar cases of harassment for other women. Allegations of coercion and emotional abuse Rohini claims that Chandrashekhar Azad misrepresented his marital status and manipulated her emotionally. She wrote that he created false expectations of marriage while exploiting her trust, participation, and loyalty in his social and political campaigns. According to her, this emotional manipulation extended beyond India, as she supported his initiatives while studying and working in Switzerland. She added that his actions led to public humiliation, with people labeling her with derogatory terms, which deepened her depression and caused two suicide attempts. Appeal for justice and recognition Rohini emphasized the systemic failure in India for marginalized women seeking justice: The system only listens to the powerful. The voices of poor and backward women like me are ignored. Who will hear the voices of self-respecting daughters? I demand strict action so that no other girl suffers such betrayal and harassment. Her posts and statements highlight her desperation and frustration over the lack of support from authorities despite filing complaints and presenting evidence.
