India’s young batting sensation Abhishek Sharma has made a big impression in the ongoing Asia Cup, and his form could soon earn him a place in India’s ODI squad. The Men in Blue will tour Australia next month for a three-match ODI series starting on October 19, followed by five T20Is. If reports are to be believed, Abhishek might get his first ODI call-up for this important series. The 25-year-old has turned heads with his fearless batting at the top of the order. He is currently the leading run-scorer of the Asia Cup with 173 runs in four matches at a staggering strike rate of 208.43, despite the sluggish Dubai pitches. His ability to take on bowlers from the word go has impressed both selectors and the team management. What makes Abhishek even more valuable is his all-around ability. The left-hander has been regularly bowling in the nets, and with his left-arm spin, he provides balance to Gautam Gambhir’s set-up. His List A record also speaks volumes; in 2014, he ran in 61 matches at a strike rate of 99.21, along with 38 wickets. Partnership with Gill strengthens his case One of Abhishek’s standout performances came against Pakistan, where he and childhood friend Shubman Gill stitched a blistering 105-run stand in just 9.5 overs. The innings showed his temperament in high-pressure situations, a quality that selectors believe will help him transition smoothly into ODIs. His aggressive approach, coupled with composure, has convinced decision-makers of his readiness. The bigger question now is where Abhishek fits into the ODI squad. With Shubman Gill already the preferred opener, there is speculation about whether Abhishek could open alongside him. If that happens, it raises doubts about the future of captain Rohit Sharma in ODIs, especially with the 2027 World Cup on the horizon. Yashasvi Jaiswal, who made his ODI debut earlier this year, also adds to the selection puzzle. With so many options at the top, selectors may need to decide how many openers to carry for the Australian tour. However, discussions about the ODI team’s direction are already in full swing. Even if Rohit continues for the Australia series, Abhishek may still be added as a reserve opener, signalling a clear move towards preparing for the 2027 World Cup.
