Researchers at Periyar University, Salem, have patented technologies to produce hydroxyapatite from eggshells. This mineral can be used for bone grafts, coatings for dental and orthopaedic implants, and scaffolds for bone tissue engineering. Their process involves a microwave reactor which produces hydroxyapatite quickly and efficiently, providing better yield from eggshells.
